NIGEL PARRY

Singer / songwriter, acoustic folk

A whole spectrum of emotion with Nigel, particularly excelling in his ability to present each song as a story. His mellow vocal tone ideal. “Bright Young Folk”.

“A prominent singer/guitarist with a big strong rousing voice that lends itself equally well to heartache ballads, rock and roll and sea shanties”, said Mainly Acoustic.

Described by a radio presenter as “one of the finest traditional folk artists in NZ”, Nigel Parry’s unique mix of contemporary, traditional and early music relies heavily on his vocal arrangements. Hailing from the UK Nigel was originally a rock singer and turned to folk music through friends, historical events and real ale.

Nigel now lives in Wellington and in the last 5 years has performed solo, in duos and bands, at events and music venues around New Zealand, in festivals and live on radio in the UK, France and Canada. His largest recent performance was in front of 10,000 at the “People’s Climate March”, from the steps of Parliament, invited to present new song When The Rain Comes.

In 2014 Nigel was voted People’s Choice for the Wellington Folk Festival, performing on the main stage. The year before he released a new studio album, “Row Out to your ship of dreams”.

A word from our sponsor – THE LMM CLUB has enjoyed many high’s this year one being the release of volume 3 our compilation CD featuring 16 tracks. The generosity of the Music Planet in Wellington has seen our club secure the use of a PA and sound system which our covers band “Encore” will use to travel with during their tour representing The WLMM Club band. Several of our club members are now enjoying increased live performance work and increased interest in them due to the marketing of their individual profiles. Shirley encourages artists to promote their profiles, create good quality music videos and to continue recording and submitting their songs for promotions to radio. We have had success with More FM Coromandel, Radio Active and several digital radio stations playing our music. LMM has no control over which producers will add our songs to their playlists but persistence does pay off. It is time to release volume 3 on a larger scale using a New Zealand owned distributor which I will reveal the details of later this month. Thank you to everyone involved in helping make our club successful. Winter is upon us so lets keep the momentum going and have some fun!!!

JANNE GUITARGIRL

Janne grew up on a farm. Her parents were share-milkers for a while so Janne’ earliest musical influences were listening to what her parents heard on the radio and on records. “They were both fabulous ballroom dancers so that’s where the rhythm came in I guess”. Janne still loves to shake it on the dance floor and can rattle a mean tambourine.
Janne loved music from an early age and got her first guitar when in primary school. Janne remembers cycling to school with the guitar slung across her back. Janne still has that very guitar, with the hummingbird scratch plate.
In high school Janne was a foundation member of the school’s Show Band as was good friend Glenn Carley, they had some fun times playing for school productions. The school had them doing odd jobs to raise money for a canteen to be built and because Janne raised the most money in the school they gave her an amplifier to go with her electric guitar. Janne went along to a local country music club for a while but didn’t like to be limited to just one musical genre.

The electric guitar was sold and the acoustic guitar stored away while her focus shifted to job, husband and children. The guitar had a brief airing for kid’s songs but not too inspired by the wheels of the bus, so back in storage again.

Many years later and single again, Janne picked up her guitar and found that playing and singing helped her through some dark days, it was a great healing therapy. Janne had never tried to write a song before but knew she was good with poetry and harmonies so decided to give it a go.

Janne’s first song was written towards the end of 2009 and many muscian buddies relate when she tells them it was a break-up song. Affairs of the heart do tend to bring out strong emotions to the fore and music is a healthy safe way to express yourself.

One day in October 2011 Janne saw on telly that the cargo ship Rena had run aground on the Astrolabe reef and saw the devastating effect it had on the environment and wildlife. Janne sat down and cried, picked up a pen and paper and in 20 minutes had written the lyrics to Bleeding Oil which now available on YouTube as a fundraiser. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of Kinsella Music studio her song was well-received.

Janne became involved with the Tauranga Acoustic Music Club and has formed friendships from this group that will last a lifetime. The relationships have enabled her to meet people like David Shanhun who listened to her songs and encouraged her to keep writing, Brendan Power who inspired her to pick up a harmonica and Shona Laing. Janne had been a fan of Shona’s from my early days of learning guitar. Little did Janne know back then that she would one day have the opportunity to sing a half hour slot of her own songs as the opening act for Shona’s concert performed in Tauranga. Shona has also been very encouraging of Janne’s songwriting.

Janne has been performing in the Tauranga region in several venues and in different musical combinations over the past few years, mostly garden centres, cafes, restaurants, pubs, retirement homes, at club concerts and music festivals, and more recently at open mic nights. This has enabled Janne to embrace many different musical genres as she loves to play with other musicians with varying instruments.

Janne has continued to write songs and with the release of her single “Seasons” is grateful to be able to meet like-minded musicians to play alongside and help her on her music journey. With the help of The LMM Club Janne has performed regularly at Brew Craft Beer Pub on the Strand in Tauranga and been a guest in Auckland at the Dogs Bollix, The Junction in Thames and will be invited to tour with LA later in 2017. “Thankyou LA Thompson for showing me how to continue to grow as a recording and performing artist.”

JAMES CORBAN

Born in Tauranga James grew up on semi-rural area on the out skirts of the city. Jame’s has early childhood memories of Sunday mornings listening to his father’s collection of jazz records.

James learned piano to grade 3. He taught himself some contemporary piano tunes he liked. In his late teens Jame’s bought a Neil Young song book and started to learn guitar. Neil is still one of his favorite song writers along with Bob Dylan,  Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and others.

Jame’s enjoys awide range of music. Joe Cocker, The Doobie Brothers, Cold Chisel, Deep purple, Led Zeppelin, U2 are just some of my favorites but he enjoyed all sorts of music from different genre’s.

Playing the guitar and learning to sing meant playing on the street busking was a good place to practice and earn a little money at the same time. With Rhythm and vocals James got together with a like-minded group of friends and formed a band (The Peace Shop) and played around the Coromandel but like a lot of bands we fell apart after one season. It was a great experience as there was 6 of them with 2 girls, so it gave us a lot of versatility and they were able to cover a wide variety of music.

James has always been a keen outdoors man. He believe my passion for nature is reflected in his writing.

James has written songs since he began playing guitar. He see music as an enjoyable way to communicate experiences, feelings, ideas etc. and have fun.

Jame’s favorite music is to create or jam with other like-minded musicians to make spontaneous but tight sounds. Ideally James would like to record his own songs (or yours) with a group of musicians in this way.

KERRYN

Singer/Songwriter, Mother, full-time employed in sales, Kerryyn has managed to fit into her busy schedule, work as a parttime performer. Based in Auckland Kerryns love of songwriting and her desire to share her own music prompted her to join our team at LMM.

Never missing an opportunity to be creative Kerryn involves herself in anything to do with music. With a family growing to adulthood themselves this has left Kerryn free to make music her priority and as Kerryns Boys are older there is time to focus on her creative self.

Kerryn is a story teller using music to express herself. Kerryn is planning to set off around NZ promoting and singing her music.

BROWNIE

Brownie has spent the past 24 years honing his musicianship craft both here in New Zealand and in Western Australia. With a diverse range of original material from blues/rock, country/rock and rock

Brownies first band “Tyson” developed a good following in a very short space of time due to sharing the passion and raw energy that Brownie has continued with throughout his musical career. Forming a duo called “The Connection” with New Zealand Rock n Roll piano legend Gerry Lee, the dynamic duo was an act not to be missed. After going there own ways, Gerry Lee with The Decotos and Brownie forming the band Kopious, Brownie returned to songwriting and performing a mix of originals and covers at corporate and private functions, pubs and clubs. Their following soon grew as people new that they were always going to get a great, high energy show. During this period Brownie also did a stint with “The Big Guys Show Band”

Bownie wanted to concentrate more on his originals so moved to Perth, Western Australia. He performed as a soloist for the first few years in W.A performing at concerts and festivals playing his original material. During this period of his career Brownie meet NZ Blues Harmonica Queen “Lindy Rooney” (Muttley). The dynamic duo soon established “Browndog and The Muttleys” which became very popular at Corporate events including the Australian summer Nats Hod Rod Show, blues and country festivals, private functions, clubs and pubs

Brownie has been continued to write songs and has now moved back home to NZ to be with his family and friends. He will also record a couple of home grown albums.

Brownie has always enjoyed NZ audiences and is passionate about getting back out on the road in his homeland with his energy

EMMA GATSBY

Emma Gatsby is a relatively unknown artist here in New Zealand.  She is however no stranger to stage and studio, having spent 17 years working in the music scene in the UK and performing most recently on stages at many well known festivals including Glastonbury, The Big Green Gathering and Bestival, where she has enchanted audiences with her unique style of music.  Her songs come directly from the powerful life experiences that have woven the fabric of her spiritual life and adventures in relationships.

Her powerful singing voice has afforded her the opportunity to sing live in the very early days of Massive Attack, who come from her home town of Bristol and sing lead solos for a performing gospel group… Brighton Goes Gospel.

Enjoying the 90’s dance scene, Emma wrote and co-produced Not Sorry which was white labelled and played on numerous dance floors in the early 2000’s.  During her time touring with Elliots Sleeping, a popular UK band covering powerful artists such as Alanis Morrisettte,  Annie Lennox and Sheryl Crow, Emma continued to write many originals, leading her to form the band Gaia.  Gaia started building momentum but soon folded due to Emma moving into motherhood.  She stayed off of the performing circuit for a while at that time but as always continued to write her compelling heart songs and worked part time as a session singer.

Returning to the stage after a six year break, Emma hit the festival scene as a solo artist, this time honing her material to the point of being ready for accompaniment once again.  She is now performing a selection of solo material together with some more developed tracks with her new band that consists of cello, acoustic percussion, Spanish guitar and bass.

Emma is currently performing songs from her soon to be produced album Stories in Song.

CHRIS BARCLAY

Songwriting has enabled Chris to revolve around guitar virtuosity and  still retain the typical formula of a pop song. Chris says, “The Guitar guides my voice”. The pentatonic scale is the pop songwriters vehicle of choice, and Chris employs this introducing the modal approach to give extra colour.

Chris was influenced by many of the 80s rock virtuoso’s who used this technique to build tension in the guitar solo or music. Chris identifies “Surfing With an Alien” by Joe Satriani as a major influence. Chris also frequently uses blues, pentatonic and chromatic runs in his playing. Chris says “I am definitely influenced by the great white blues guitar players who were influenced by some of the early black blues players.”

Chris has a enjoyed nearly a decade performing for Art Exhibitions and Weddings. Having worked in several covers bands including Nstinct with LA Thompson and later acoustic duo when their band broke up. With performances at Transmission House and The Occidental Chris is well equipped to handle any gig from a small intimate party to festival.

In 2012 Chris won the Guitarshop TV artist video competition with his song ‘I Won’t Fade’.

KATHARTICUS

Hailing from Dunedin, Katharticus’ music ranges from Surf Punk to Post Rock and nearly everything between. Their music is typified by melodic feel-good heavy guitar Party Rock songs and tunes with an emotional outpouring of soaring guitars with progressive overtones and deep searching heart-felt lyrics. The trio can be found regularly gigging throughout Otago and Southland.

They released their debut album Katharticus, in early 2010 which contained the singles Kiss Me K8 and Mouvery Shuffle. Katharticus attained album of the week on Kiwi FM in February 2010, with the single Mouvery Shuffle hitting their top twenty and staying in their playlist for nigh on a year. Several tracks appeared on various other radio stations including National Radio, Radio One, Volcano Radio, OAR FM,and Puketapu Radio, not to mention varying assorted overseas radio stations.

This was followed by their second album Metro Angel which was released in late 2013. Their controversial political satire song Happy Place was often aired on the Postman Show and attained international notoriety when it was featured on the infamous American conspiracy journalist’s Vinny Eastwood Show’s Home Page and then on at least a couple of American radio stations. Also the epic 18:46 minute Gypsy Wind was featured in a compilation album alongside songs from the likes Billy T K Senior.

They have recently released their first video clip for a new song; Don’t Blink and are about to release an exciting new single Blow The Comfort Zone, complete with a video clip.

The trio consists of Michael Wingfield (aka Wingi) – Vocals/Guitars/Ukuleles/Keys, Greg Trounson – Bass/Triangle and Craig Whyte – Drums/Cymbals. They exude an infectious attitude of intense fun and passion in their energetic live shows. This was very evident when in early 2015 when the band continued to gig relentlessly despite Wingi breaking his foot which they saw as a golden opportunity to emblazon his plaster cast with the band’s infamous cat logo.
