Gavin is an accomplished songwriter and producer of music. Working with several artists collaborating and producing high quality music he decided it was time to focus on his own material. Born visually and hearing impaired, it was evident that Gavin would have his own little bubble going right from the beginning. A statement was often made by his friends and family: “You were born [playing] in front of an audience”.
Gavin’s musical skills were fostered at an early stage of his life while attending Homai College (School for the blind). By the age of 12 he had taught himself drums, bass, keyboards, and guitar. Gavin also spent countless hours sitting in front of his record player listening to hundreds of records. No need to wonder where his pocket money went!
Inspired by a wide variety of bands/artists ranging from Steve Vai through to The Doobie Brothers, Gavin had many influences to guide his musical journey. His single biggest musical influence however has been Prince. Multi faceted, multi instrumentalist, Gavin was inspired by Prince’s ability to play many different instruments, write in many different styles, with a huge vocal range.
Gavin’s multi instrumental skills saw him join his first working band at 17 on drums, quickly moving on to stints in other popular covers bands, including one of Tauranga’s most successful covers band Side FX. His role as musical director/lighting tech earned him huge respect throughout the industry. At the same time, Gavin’s passion for original music was steadily growing in the background. His songwriting process is often inspired by a musical riff/hook going around in his head, then turning that idea into a fully finished song. He says writing a song always starts with a riff or a drum beat. Gavin’s passion and skill set as a producer/engineer allowed him to turn his musical ideas into reality.
