Hailing from Dunedin, Katharticus’ music ranges from Surf Punk to Post Rock and nearly everything between. Their music is typified by melodic feel-good heavy guitar Party Rock songs and tunes with an emotional outpouring of soaring guitars with progressive overtones and deep searching heart-felt lyrics. The trio can be found regularly gigging throughout Otago and Southland.
They released their debut album Katharticus,in early 2010 which contained the singles Kiss Me K8and Mouvery Shuffle. Katharticusattained album of the week on Kiwi FM in February 2010, with the single Mouvery Shufflehitting their top twenty and staying in their playlist for nigh on a year. Several tracks appeared on various other radio stations including National Radio, Radio One, Volcano Radio, OAR FM,and Puketapu Radio, not to mention varying assorted overseas radio stations.
This was followed by their second album Metro Angelwhich was released in late 2013. Their controversial political satire song Happy Place was often aired on the Postman Show and attained international notoriety when it was featured on the infamous American conspiracy journalist’s Vinny Eastwood Show’s Home Page and then on at least a couple of American radio stations. Also the epic 18:46 minuteGypsy Windwas featured in a compilation album alongside songs from the likes Billy T K Senior.
They have recently released their first video clip for a new song; Don’t Blinkand are about to release an exciting new single Blow The Comfort Zone, complete with a video clip.
The trio consists of Michael Wingfield (aka Wingi) – Vocals/Guitars/Ukuleles/Keys, Greg Trounson – Bass/Triangle and Craig Whyte – Drums/Cymbals. They exude an infectious attitude of intense fun and passion in their energetic live shows. This was very evident when in early 2015 when the band continued to gig relentlessly despite Wingi breaking his foot which they saw as a golden opportunity to emblazon his plaster cast with the band’s infamous cat logo.
