Kurt is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who teaches.
This year there’s is high demand for guitar, bass and ukulele lessons. Kurt has been teaching for severl years. A few of his students have left school, moved towns and some are now trying new instruments.
The band projects Kurt is involved in improve every year and his students grow.
Kurt teaches all the relevant chords and scales needed so they can play their compositions to a standard to fit the curriculum, depending on what year they are.
He also teaches his students different styles of music such as swing, Spanish, jazz, Latin grooves, ¾ timing, Celtic rhythms, reggae, hip hop, etc. Students also get the experience of how to use equipment such as guitar pedals, microphone placements, and PA set-ups.
Kurt makes an effort to be open to the students cultural needs such as learning a traditional Te Reo song or other cultural music.
He also mentor five bands at Papamoa College which includes teaching them songs and practising them correctly as a band which is a different skill and experience to playing on their own.
Kurt loves to dorganise the students regular gigs at school lunchtimes and all age shows around the BOP. The next step will be teaching them how to record themselves and making a demo CD and video for events.
